Instrumentation and Controls Engineer
Location: Walton Hills, OH
Salary: $120,000

In this position, you will report directly to the Platform Technical Manager, primarily focusing on two key facilities in the greater Cleveland area. You will also engage with Process Control resources across other North American locations to manage and enhance instrumentation, process controls, and Management Information Systems (MIS). Your key duties will involve the installation, troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of PLC hardware and software, as well as control devices and monitoring systems. Additional tasks include refining control loops, creating and modifying HMI graphic screens and alarms, and leading automation projects. You will also manage projects that aim to improve processes, focusing on both electrical/instrumentation aspects and broader capital initiatives.

Core Responsibilities

  • Take charge of troubleshooting, repairing, and programming control systems at the Walton Hills and WS sites.
  • Create ladder logic and graphical interfaces for the plants’ PLCs and control computers.
  • Draft documentation and narratives for control programming and safety interlocks.
  • Keep up with industry best practices and the latest technologies.
  • Provide training and support to ensure the effective implementation of instrumentation and control initiatives.
  • Oversee troubleshooting, repair, and installation of process equipment, such as variable speed drives, encoders, probes, power supplies, and control valves.
  • Diagnose issues with various instrumentation components, including temperature, flow, pressure, and level sensors.
  • Design and execute projects that involve information systems, including security systems, networks, phone systems, and computer setups.
  • Produce wiring diagrams, layout designs, and engineering specifications to direct both internal and external engineering teams.
  • Source cost estimates for instruments, control components, variable speed drives, communication gear, and MIS equipment.
  • Lead site projects and collaborate with Process/Production Engineers to maintain and upgrade site instrumentation, PLCs, control systems, HMI software, VFDs, PFDs, and P&IDs.
  • Develop and update standard operating procedures or work instructions related to process control systems or HMI interfaces.
  • Assist in the creation of automated reports utilizing PLC/HMI software.
  • Support and enhance site security and IT systems, providing field support to Corporate IT where needed.
  • Adhere to Quality and Environmental, Health, Safety, and Security policies, and be knowledgeable about ISO 9001 and RC14001 management systems relevant to this role.
  • Conduct duties with a focus on personal safety and the safety of all personnel on site, reporting any Safety, Health, or Environmental incidents to management promptly.
  • Carry out additional responsibilities as required.
  • Successfully manage projects while balancing cost, quality, and schedule requirements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical, Mechanical, Instrumentation, or Electrical Engineering.
  • 2-4 years of experience in instrumentation, process controls, and HMI systems.
  • Field training or experience in instrumentation, controls, and electrical systems is preferred.
  • Willingness to respond to call-outs and flexibility to work extended hours on-site or remotely, including weekends and holidays.
  • Ability to interpret electrical schematics, P&IDs, ladder diagrams, technical manuals, and maintain relevant documentation.
  • Competence or willingness to learn about information systems including site security, computer networks, phone systems, and PC applications.
  • Understanding of PLC control and HMI systems; ability to develop or learn to create PLC code and graphical interfaces for SCADA systems.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite.
  • Strong communication abilities and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent organizational and work planning skills are essential.
