Applications Chemist

$80,000 – $110,000 The role of the Applications Chemist is integral to the enhancement and expansion of a product portfolio through the generation of technical data, provision of application support, and development of solutions tailored to customer and business requirements. This position is crucial for fostering both current products and new market innovations and involves close collaboration with various cross-functional teams including research and development, operations, marketing, and commercial partners. The professional in this role will convert technical insights into actionable applications that facilitate innovation, enhance product effectiveness, and drive business growth. Key Responsibilities for Applications Chemist:
- Design and conduct laboratory experiments to showcase the performance and value of both new and existing products.
- Develop an in-depth understanding of the products, applications, and target markets associated with the portfolio.
- Implement project management techniques for larger development initiatives, including planning, execution, and communicating outcomes.
- Offer technical assistance to address product performance issues and processing challenges, supporting both internal and external customers.
- Create, specify, and validate testing methodologies to fulfill customer requirements and train technicians on new or updated processes as necessary.
- Manage and assist in the upkeep of testing equipment, including LOI and cone calorimeter capabilities, to produce performance data for customer projects.
- Produce technical documentation and prepare clear reports, presentations, and summaries to support global customers, internal teams, and marketing efforts.
- Collaborate with manufacturing teams in process optimization, troubleshooting, and root cause analyses.
- Maintain product specifications, technical data sheets, and other supporting documentation related to applications.
- Prioritize safety at all times and actively cultivate a strong safety culture through meticulous laboratory practices and continuous improvement initiatives.
Qualifications for Applications Chemist:
- A Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Polymer Science, Materials Science, or a related field.
- 5–10 years of relevant experience in application development, technical service, product development, or lab-based technical support.
- Proven project management capabilities, including effective prioritization of tasks, timeline management, and driving projects to completion.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, able to convey technical information effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- (Preferred) Experience interfacing with customers and collaborating across commercial, manufacturing, and technical teams.
- (Preferred) Background in PVC, polymer modifiers, flame retardants, wire & cable, or related materials and applications.
- (Preferred) Hands-on experience with flammability testing, compounding, or associated polymer testing techniques.
- (Preferred) Practical experience in maintaining, calibrating, and troubleshooting laboratory and analytical testing apparatus.
- (Preferred) Ability to analyze test outcomes and translate technical results into customer-focused recommendations.
- (Preferred) Experience in a global, cross-functional setting involving R&D, manufacturing, and commercial teams.
