Laboratory Technician
Johnston, IA
$20-21.50/hr
12-Month Contract

The Laboratory Technician plays a key role in supporting insect research initiatives that utilize both plant and diet-based systems. This includes the rearing of insect populations along with the growth and maintenance of diverse crops in a controlled environment. The successful candidate will maintain a professional, organized, and safe working space while adhering to all compliance requirements.

Responsibilities of the Laboratory Technician:

  • Collaborate with team members to carry out experiments focused on insects and plants.
  • Gather and curate high-quality data while adhering to established deadlines.
  • Support the daily operations of insect colonies, including tasks such as diet preparation, egg harvesting, setting up weekly production, staging insects, and ensuring sanitation.
  • Engage with plants and insects in environments such as greenhouses, growth chambers, or field locations.
  • Prepare all necessary materials for the maintenance of insect colonies and the execution of assays in a timely manner.
  • Perform additional tasks including cleaning, handling, packaging, and storing materials and equipment used in the facility.

Requirements for the Laboratory Technician:

  • A high school diploma or GED is required. A bachelor’s degree in entomology, agriculture, horticulture, plant physiology, or a related discipline, or three or more years of comparable experience or relevant education, is preferred.
  • Strong attention to detail and adherence to standard operating procedures along with safety and ergonomics protocols is crucial.
  • Effective communication and organizational skills, along with self-motivation, a positive demeanor, and the capability to work independently and collaboratively with minimal oversight.
  • Basic computer skills are preferred, including proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and the adaptability to learn proprietary research software.
  • The ability to stand or sit for extended periods and lift objects up to 30 lbs. Candidates should be able to perform repetitive tasks in a warm, humid growth chamber environment.
