Laboratory Equipment Technician
Boston, MA
$25-35/hr
2nd Shift

The Laboratory Equipment Technician will act as the initial point of contact for any equipment-related challenges, execute preventive maintenance tasks, oversee vendor communications, and ensure the lab operates seamlessly. This position is vital for sustaining the efficiency and quality of our organism engineering facility.

Core Responsibilities of the Laboratory Equipment Technician:

  • Act as the main responder to equipment malfunctions and errors during the 2nd shift.
  • Conduct in-house preventive maintenance on laboratory equipment on a scheduled weekly and monthly basis.
  • Perform regular inspections of the lab and equipment systems to ensure they are ready for operation.
  • Execute minor in-house repairs on laboratory and automation machinery.
  • Remove and reinstall various equipment, including incubators (Infors), plate readers, plate sealers, and related instruments.
  • Monitor cold storage systems and address any issues that arise.
  • Take part in a 2-week rotation for on-call coverage of cold storage situations around the clock.
  • Coordinate with automation equipment vendors and handle the scheduling and communication for service and repairs.
  • Ensure laboratory consumables for automation equipment are maintained and restocked to facilitate continuous operations.
  • Work collaboratively with Facilities, EHS, and Unity Lab Services to address cross-functional equipment and laboratory requirements.

Qualifications for the Laboratory Equipment Technician:

  • High school diploma accompanied by at least 3 years of laboratory experience.
  • Availability for 2nd shift is essential.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and comfortable using various digital tools and technologies.
  • Capable of lifting up to 50 lbs and maneuvering equipment in confined lab spaces.
  • Background in a dynamic laboratory environment is preferred.
  • Knowledge of automation equipment and laboratory robotics is beneficial.
  • Experience with pneumatic fittings, tubing, and in-house gas systems (nitrogen, compressed air, CO2) is a plus.
  • Proven expertise in deinstalling and reinstalling laboratory instruments.
