HVAC Technician

The HVAC Technician plays a crucial role in upholding the operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of essential building systems within a healthcare setting. This position is dedicated to ensuring the dependable performance of HVAC systems, building automation, mechanical equipment, and other related facility operations that are vital for patient care. The ideal candidate will possess exceptional troubleshooting abilities, especially in diagnosing and restoring HVAC and control systems following electrical disturbances, utility interruptions, generator transfers, and power glitches that could result in equipment or automation systems failing, losing communication, or functioning outside established parameters.
HVAC Technician Responsibilities:
- Conduct maintenance, troubleshooting, repairs, and preventive maintenance on a variety of HVAC equipment such as Air Handling Units (AHUs), Rooftop Units (RTUs), Chillers, Boilers, Pumps, VAV systems, exhaust and supply fans, as well as split and packaged units.
- Identify and resolve failures, alarms, and performance issues in HVAC systems.
- Examine Building Automation Systems (BAS) and HVAC controls to diagnose communication, programming, sensor, and equipment problems.
- Address equipment failures resulting from power fluctuations, utility disruptions, generator transitions, and power bumps, ensuring systems are returned to normal operation while minimizing interference with facility operations.
- Perform root cause analysis after system outages and suggest corrective measures to enhance reliability.
- Monitor the performance of mechanical systems and pinpoint opportunities for efficiency enhancements.
- Carry out routine inspections and preventive maintenance in line with facility standards and applicable regulatory requirements.
- Collaborate with external vendors, contractors, and internal maintenance personnel to coordinate repairs when necessary.
- Keep precise maintenance records, work orders, and documentation.
- Engage in on-call rotation and respond to emergency situations as needed.
- Ensure adherence to all safety, environmental, and regulatory standards.
HVAC Technician Qualifications:
- Completion of high school diploma or GED.
- At least 3 years of experience in commercial, industrial, healthcare, or institutional HVAC maintenance.
- Proven experience in troubleshooting HVAC equipment and building automation systems.
- Proficiency in diagnosing and restoring systems after power interruptions, equipment shutdowns, and control system faults.
- Knowledge of electrical troubleshooting, motor controls, relays, contactors, and control circuits.
- Ability to interpret mechanical, electrical, and control schematics.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in a hospital, healthcare, or critical facility setting.
- Familiarity with Building Automation Systems (BAS) such as Johnson Controls, Siemens, Honeywell, Schneider Electric, or equivalent systems.
- HVAC certification, technical training, or related education from a trade school.
- Background in supporting emergency power systems and facilities equipped with generators.
- Experience with chilled water, steam, and hydronic systems.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Strong skills in mechanical and electrical troubleshooting.
- Aptitude for quickly identifying issues during critical facility events.
- Understanding of HVAC controls, sensors, actuators, VFDs, and BAS networks.
- Capability to prioritize tasks in a dynamic environment.
- Excellent communication and documentation skills.
- Dedication to safety, reliability, and outstanding customer service.
