The Supply Chain Manager plays a vital role in managing all facets of purchasing and supplier relationships to guarantee the efficient, economical, and high-quality acquisition of materials, equipment, and services. This position merges tactical purchasing execution with strategic initiatives involving supplier negotiations, cost management, and interdepartmental collaboration. Acting as the primary point of contact between internal teams and external vendors, the Supply Chain Manager supports production objectives, enhances profitability, and promotes operational efficiency.
Key Responsibilities of the Supply Chain Manager
**Strategic Procurement**
- Oversee and coordinate all procurement processes from purchase intention to final delivery.
- Assess material needs, specifications, preferred vendors, and delivery schedules.
- Engage in negotiations regarding pricing, lead times, and contract details with suppliers to ensure the best cost, quality, and delivery outcomes.
- Update and maintain lists of approved suppliers while researching and assessing potential new suppliers.
- Provide quarterly reports to management on cost savings, supplier performance metrics, and sourcing opportunities.
**Operational Excellence**
- Ensure timely deliveries and compliance with quality standards for all procured materials and services.
- Review purchase documentation to confirm supplier compliance with corporate standards.
- Keep detailed records of purchases, orders, shipping notices, and inventory documentation.
- Actively resolve issues related to delivery, invoicing, and quality, collaborating closely with both suppliers and internal teams.
- Work with the Finance department to address cost changes and their impact on purchasing.
**Cross-Functional Collaboration**
- Collaborate with Engineering, Operations, and Finance departments to align purchasing with production timelines and business requirements.
- Deliver updates on supplier performance, pricing patterns, and sourcing strategies to stakeholders.
- Facilitate coordination among purchasing, planning, and inventory management to uphold optimal stock levels.
- Ensure thorough and timely documentation is provided to internal teams and vendors.
**Continuous Improvement**
- Identify opportunities to improve processes and enhance the efficiency of procurement and supplier relationships.
- Stay informed about the latest trends and best practices in purchasing, sourcing, and materials management.
- Support the utilization and accuracy of ERP/MRP systems to enhance purchasing workflows.
Requirements for the Supply Chain Manager
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Supply Chain Management, Engineering, or a related discipline (MBA preferred).
- If no degree, a minimum of 7 years of advanced experience in purchasing, procurement, or supply chain positions.
- Preferred background in manufacturing or industrial settings.
- Experienced in ERP/MRP systems (such as BPCS, IBM iSeries, or comparable tools).
- Experience in sourcing castings and forgings is an advantage.
- Exceptional negotiation, analytical, and decision-making capabilities.
- Demonstrated ability to navigate the balance between cost, quality, and delivery performance.
- Strong communication skills and effective vendor relationship management.
- Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel and general computer proficiency.
- Ability to interpret blueprints and technical specifications.
- A strategic thinker with meticulous attention to detail and a focus on results.
